Seminar "Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) - Details" (duration: 2 days)

In this seminar you get fully independent and in detail information about the new Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) of the TCP/IP protocol architecture. The seminar offers you technical information about important changes compared to the "traditional" Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4), new addresses and their numbers, important protocol functions and their influence to higher layer protocols. Migration concepts and procedures will bei explained.

WHY you should attend:

  • because you have to prepare the implementation of IPv6 in our network
  • because you need knowledge about protocol functions and the migration from IPv4 to IPv6
  • because you prepare IPv6 configurations, run IPv6 capable servers and you are interested in security aspects

Main Audience:

  • Planners, system technicians, consultants

Your  PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE:

  • Networking and TCP/IP knowledge is essential

CONTENT of the Seminar

Introduction
Actual availability of IPv4 addresses - Key Requirements - History and Future of IPv6 - Highlights of IPv6 - Advantages and Arguments against IPv6

IPv6 Addressing
Addressing in IPv4 - Addressing in IPv6 (Formats, Size, Syntax, Prefix, Prefix Assignment / Delegation, Validity of an Address, Scope, logical Interfaces of an IPv6 node, Address Types, Unicast Variants, their Use and Values, Mapping of MAC Addresses, Embedding of IPv4 in IPv6 Addresses, Anycast, Multicast, reserved Multicast Addresses, Neighbor Discovery, Multihoming, Renumbering, Mobile IPv6) - Examples of Commands for Address Assignment /
Query

IPv6 Protocol Functions
Header Format (Compared to IPv4, Content of Fields Options, Extensions) - Packet Size, Fragmenting - Automatic Configuration (stateless, stateful), Use of DHCPv6 - Defined Security Functions in IPSec

Influence to Higher Layer Protocols
ICMPv6 (Error Messages, "Ping", Path MTU Discovery, Neighbor Discovery) - TCP, UDP - Routing Protocols (RIPng, OSPF, BGP, EIGRP,...) - Application Layer Protocols, Network Management - Name Resolution (with DNS and DHCP, AAAA Record, Reverse Name Lookup, Dynamic Domain Name System (DDNS), Example Configuration, Examples of DDNS Providers)

Migration from IPv4 to IPv6
Dual Stack Architectures - Tunneling (Host to Host, Host to Router, Router to Router, Intrasite Tunnel, Tunnel and Address Translation, different Tunnel Variations and their Application, Functions and required Components - Different Protocol Gateways / Converters / Translators - Tunnelbroker (Function, Examples og Tunnelbroker Providers)

Availability of IPv6
International (Top Level Domains, Backbone Networks) - Examples of national Providers supporting IPv6 - Implementations (Operating Systems, Troubleshooting Tools, Network Management Systems)

Support of IPv6 in MS-Windows and Linux
Covers following Operating Systems: MS-Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server, Linux, Start / Stop of IPv6 Services, Set and Query of Configuration Parameters, Examples of Troubleshooting Tools - Different Link Collections

How to implement IPv6
Who will be influenced? - Questions - Required Actions - Link Collection
